#1: Communication and Teamwork: What are they?

Every human being communicates. From a wailing baby out of his mother's womb, to a sickly old man on his deathbed. Communication is an integral part of our species.

Would I be able to survive without it? Maybe. Try telling your local grocer that you want your weekly purchase of greens, without communicating. How about telling your mother that you require more pocket money, again, without communicating?

Rather than exploring what communication means to me, let me show you how important miscommunication can mean to me. We shall explore a scene from Oliver Twist; Oliver asks for MORE!

Very simply, there was a miscommunication between Oliver and the headmaster of the orphanage. Oliver just wanted more food, because he was hungry. However, the headmaster thought that Oliver was greedy to ask for more food. This very short conversation, highlights how serious miscommunication can be, especially between 2 people from 2 different backgrounds.

Besides that, have you noticed the way Oliver's friends communicate with Oliver. Winks, nudges and more winks! The boys have managed to master the art of communication without words. Furthermore, have you noticed the banners in the background of the dining hall. "God is True". Communication! The orphanage further tries to educate the boys through subtle exposure to these messages.

To summarize it all, communication is My Life.

Teamwork. My friend has a t-shirt with a group of people assaulting a person lying on the floor. Below this illustration are the words, TEAMWORK. Ironic but true.

But is teamwork really necessary? Would it be better if you could do things on your own, without having any pesky team mates ruin your life's work? Would it be even greater that you would not have to wait for irritating team mates who love to come late for meetings? These are the problems plagued by teamwork! Regardless of whether you can pick your team mates for a rescue mission, it's hard to deny that you would still have to face your team mate's annoying personality. Imagine dying from irritation even before you rescue a dying man.

However, therein lies a deeper meaning. Without these irritating team mates, would you have been able to save the dying man? Would you alone be able to cross dangerous ravines, climb dangerous cliffs and cross narrow mountain paths to reach the victim?

Personal comfort or teamwork? I have chosen mine. What is yours?

Another video on teamwork to end it off. Ironically again, from the North KIM-chi nation. :)

  1. Hey,

I'd say really well written! Kept me glued on till the end. I love the way you've so closely related it to almost everything done today. I realized that communication is actually used in literally everything we do and see.

And the reference to Oliver Twist was indeed remarkable.

Looking forward to your future posts:)

  2. Hi,

I agree with Sasha, this is a really good post. However, I think it may have exceed the word limit a bit. We all should be careful with the length of our posts because that is the first element for readers to decide whether to read or not.

Other than that, the two videos are great. I like your style of writing. Looking forward to read your future posts.

  3. Hey,

It is really enjoyable to read your post, especially when I read your opening “From a wailing baby out of his mother's womb, to a sickly old man on his deathbed”, I was attracted immediately.

Compare to an article on a newspaper, I have to admit that I like the way that blogs tell stories--- they can have vivid videos inserted. However, I have to say that I did not really understand why “Please, sir. I want some more” can lead to misunderstanding of the headmaster. Is that because Oliver did not make himself explained or it is a greedy way to ask for things?

For teamwork, I strongly agree with you about the irritating parts and essential parts of working as a team. In addition, I would like to say that being a part of a team, one must learn to understand and comprehend others, in order to maximize the efficiency of teamwork. Just like the ants, throwing personal stuffs away and getting the job done.

  4. Hi ChengYang,

The use of all the videos in the post really put your opinions across explicitly. While not only complementing your own view, the videos certainly make what seemed like a boring topic more interesting and animated. And even thou the post is substantially long, you certainly didn’t drift off your main points.

While we will not always meet with our ideal teammates, we certainly should not despair when we are teamed together with people whom we dislike. Everything can be worked out with effective communication and sometimes the worse teammates can turn to be your best partners. Working with someone is most likely better than working with none at all. I have made my choice too. =)

  6. Hi Kris,

I will definitely keep your comment in mind. I guess I was too carried away with writing. I am really glad that you were able to finish reading the post even though its length made it seem intimidating.

A long winding post is definitely a turn off for all readers.

    Cheers!

  7. Hi Jacky,

I apologize for not being able top explain the example of Oliver Twist clearly.

The headmaster in this case, believes that the boys are greedy and therefore, reacts very strongly when Oliver actually asks for more. Oliver and the boys, on the other hand, just want more food as they receive very little everyday, and are starving.

Yes, teamwork is irritating, but it is necessary to get the job done.

    Cheers!

  8. Hi Yifan,

I'm glad we have all made our choice. Its through those irritating moments in a team that we really come to treasure the bond that we share at the end of the day. Without our irritating teammates, we could still have gotten the job done, but we would never have gained a learning experience from the people around us.

Let's work on to make the best out of every team we get into!

    Chees!
